Capitalization has had a major effect on the music industry in the past decade. Labels have placed an emphasis on their artists to provide fans with copious amounts of physical merchandise along with their music. Consequently, a social capital amongst fans has been created around said merchandise. No longer are shirts of our favorite bands worn to show our support but rather to give us more “clout” amongst our peers.
